Bored and Brilliant Challenge

Recently, my entire class was challenged by the teacher, to see how long could they last without their phones or any electronic devices. The idea of the challenge came from the Ted Talk, How boredom can lead to your most brilliant ideas. In this video, people were challenged to stay a whole week without any electronic devices. The challenge was created to see if we can create creative ideas by being bored. As it was explained in the video, lots of people were able to find new ways to entertain themselves. Each person faced his/her own difficulties, but for me it was different.

I wanted to stay 24 hours without any electronic devices, that is why I started the challenge on Thursday, right after the last period, at 1:15 pm. At the beginning, I went to find something to eat. Then I looked around for something to do, therefore I have decided to clean my room and make up my bed. I tried my best to not go to the living room and watch TV with my family, hence I went to read something. Also due to the fact that I have lots of comic books, I went to read some of them. After a long time reading, it was 3:11pm. After checking the time, I went to do some homework and study for any upcoming tests. At 4 pm, I ate lunch and this is where it got hard for me because now I couldn’t find anything to do at all. I started to walk around the house, wishing to find something to do. I went to the kitchen and tried to create something, but I failed. After a while, I started to get sleepy, that is why I went to have a conversation with my mom because I was very bored. Then I couldn’t stop myself, and then I slept till 6 am. I was about to open my phone, then I remembered the challenge. So I went to sleep again till 12:57 pm. At the end, I just stared at the wall until it was 1:15 pm.

This challenge was hard and I realized lots of things about myself. I learned that technology and social media are the ones who keep me awake. Maybe that is the reason why most teenagers have sleeping issues, due to the fact that social media keeps them awake. The second thing is that I am terrible at cooking. I thought I knew how to cook, but when I tried, I didn’t do such a great job. In my opinion, I think that the day I took off from technology made me feel more interactive with my family. I am considering doing this challenge but for a longer period of time, because it was fun doing different things rather than just opening Instagram.
