Coronavirus is Our Life
Covid-19 is a disease that is killing everybody around us. After watching the "Coronavirus is Our Life", I have learned a lot about Covid-19. Covid-19 is a coronavirus, obviously. Yet corona viruses are a specific subset of virus, and they are very unique with their unique characteristics. They use RNA, Ribonucleic acid, instead of DNA, Deoxyribonucleic acid, as their genetic material. The virus is covered with spikes, which are used to invade cells. The real corona in corona virus, is the spikes. Until December, there were only six coronaviruses, and the Covid-19 is the seventh. SARS, Severe Acute respiratory syndrome, and MERS, Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome, are corona viruses. All corona viruses are called respiratory syndrome because that is what the corona viruses attack, the lungs. This virus causes many respiratory symptoms like dry cough, fever, or even fatal viral pneumonia. This virus is zoonotic, meaning it gets transmitted from animals to people. Also it gets transmitted from person to person.
Alanna gave us, as an audience, a better chance of believing her by using rhetorical devices. She has used Ethos to start off the talk, as her first rhetorical device. She has said, “I've been working in global health for twenty years and my specific technical specialty is in health systems and what happens when health systems experience severe shock. I've also worked in global health journalism. I've written about global health and biosecurity for newspapers and web outlets and I published a book." Which makes the audience believe her because of her experiences that show that what she is saying are true facts. She also said, “keep that in mind as I talk to you.” She wanted them to know that she is not lying and that she is talking using her experiences. Secondly, she has used Pathos, as her second rhetorical device. She began to discuss how poor countries are the ones to die first due to corona. She has said that the Covid-19 had emerged in Chad, which has three and a half doctors for every hundred thousand people. What if it emerged in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has just released its last Ebola patient from treatment. She wanted us to feel sorrowful and sad for these countries, and the way she talked made it appeal to our emotions. She has used Logos, as her last rhetorical device. As an example, when she said that 20% of the people with Covid-19 would need to be hospitalized. Alanna wanted to discuss her strong argument of how the Covid-19 will be worse because most of the countries don’t know how to deal with it, as the US is barely able to control and handle the crisis. Alanna was able to really show her argument by using all the rhetorical devices, which made us, as the audience believe her.
This talk has busted a myth for me. I didn’t know that animals can transfer the corona to us. I always thought that the viruses, because they have different effects on both animals and humans, that it won’t be transferred. However, I was wrong because this virus is zoonotic, which means that it is a virus that spreads from animals to humans. The other fact she said about not wearing a mask unless you are sick or a health care provider. Wearing a face mask when you are not sick, causes you to sweat. Which causes bacteria to develop. That is why wear a face mask only if you are sick or a health care provider
Alanna has suggested many suggestions. I am considering using some of them. The first suggestion is washing my hands. As she said, Set up cues and routines in your life to get you to wash your hands. Wash your hands every time you enter and leave a building. Wash your hands before you go into a meeting and when you come out of a meeting.” I really like this one because sometimes I feel like I need to wash my hands even more. The second suggestion I am considering is sanitizing my phone, because I take my phone everywhere I go. Therefore it might carry bacteria and that is also why my mom always sanitizes my phone every time we go out of the house. The third and the most important suggestion to me, is not touching my face. I am a person who always puts her hands on her face, rubs her eyes. Therefore I really need to stop that bad habit and it will also prevent me from having any other bacterias. Hence now I will have a routine.
I don’t really think that self-quarantine can happen, because as humans, we are “social animals” as Alanna said. I don’t think that it is possible for us to stay at home with no social interactions. Yet, there is a problem that we don’t know if someone has corona or not. As Alanna said, “ You could have a period where you're infected and show no symptoms that's as long as 24 days." That shows that maybe you have infected too many people. However, if you self-quarantine, even after you have affected others, is better than affected more. Staying at home will prevent others with no virus, not to get it. After I have seen many videos, some people try to share the bacteria by licking elevator buttons, and etc. Which is very disgusting, the fact that people just want to kill others. Even if you have affected others, stay at home for a less risk.
In conclusion, this video has given me more understanding of how the virus isn’t just unique but it is destroying our lives. For me, I didn’t realize that Covid-19 was that harsh and hard to deal with. I just thought it was a virus that will be around for a while and people are panicking about and that it will just fade. I guess it is not that easy this time and I appreciate every person risking his/her own life just to keep us safe. Stay at home for your protection and others.
