"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"
As people go on with their lives every single day, they encounter many different things and depending on their personality, they react differently. Accordingly people have different opinions on many things, which leads to great controversy between people. Yet, as Margaret Hungerford said, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. This indicates that people can find beauty in something that may not be appealing to others, which is common and acceptable.
The quote by Hungerford usually comes across as a cliché saying, however it has great significance in the musical Man of La Mancha. In which, Don Quixote explains to Sancho, “[that]...like beauty, my friend, ‘tis in the eye of the beholder” (Wasserman et al. 21). It is said to portray how both characters see things differently. This quote takes place specifically when Sancho is perplexed on how Don Quixote sees the road as an adventure, full of “knights and nations, warlocks, wizards”, while Sancho sees it as “the road to El Toboso where you can buy chickens cheap” (Wasserman et al. 21). A main example that portrays how people perceive things differently is when Sancho is seeing just an inn, however, Don Quixote keeps insisting that he is seeing a castle and that both Maria and the Innkeeper are the king and queen of the castle. Another example of how beauty is diverse is when Don Quixote keeps referring to Aldonza, a prostitute, as a noble lady, who has a beautiful heart. However, the other characters keep seeing her as prostitute, with a tough personality. Hence, while Don Quixote sees Aldonza as this beauty, the others keep making fun of him, since they are unable to perceive what he is seeing. Thus, Hungerford’s quote doesn’t apply only to beauty, but it also applies to many aspects of life.

I can find myself relating to the quote since I, like all people, have different opinions. These differences of opinions happen on smallest things, such as clothes. I might like my outfit a lot, yet others would disagree with me. This also applies to how we view other people. I remember me and my friend were once talking about our classmates and how we don’t like some of them. And I remember that moment when she told me, “You have seen them through only one pair of eyes, which led you to make your opinion. However their friends and loved ones have seen them from a different pair of eyes, which is why they love them.” That day I learned that it really depends on what we believe is beauty. Since, for example, I believe that beauty comes in respect, while others might think that beauty comes from humor. It all depends on how we see the world. Beauty to us is a very controversial topic since there is no set example of what beauty might be. Thus, all that could be done is respect other people’s opinions and be kind to them.
